Fleet vehicle with driver identification at the ignition

Accessory

iButton

Know who started the vehicle—and control who can.

iButton is a compact identification key used with an in-vehicle iReader. Each driver presents their iButton at the reader before starting the engine, so Trakngo can tie trips to the right person and enforce your access rules in real time.

What you need

iButton is not a standalone tracker. It works as part of a wired telematics install:

  • 4G wired tracker (FMC130) — permanent power and the digital link to Trakngo.
  • iReader — installed in the cab (typically near the ignition) to read each iButton.
  • iButton keys — one per authorised driver; presented to the iReader to identify themselves.

How it works

  1. 1 An installer fits the FMC130 wired tracker and mounts the iReader where drivers naturally reach before starting the vehicle.
  2. 2 Each authorised driver is issued an iButton registered to their profile in Trakngo.
  3. 3 At the start of a shift, the driver touches their iButton to the iReader. The tracker records who is in control—unauthorised keys do not enable the vehicle when access is revoked.

Feature highlights

  • Driver-level vehicle access — decide which drivers can start a given vehicle, not just who has keys in a drawer.
  • Grant or revoke instantly — remove access from the platform when someone leaves, without collecting physical keys from every site.
  • Accurate trip attribution — journeys, alerts, and reports align to the identified driver instead of an anonymous vehicle record.
  • Durable identification — rugged keys suited to daily use in commercial vehicles and outdoor environments.

Best fit scenarios

  • Shared pool vehicles where multiple drivers rotate through the same unit.
  • Contractor or casual-driver fleets that need tight control over who can mobilise assets.
  • Operations with compliance or insurance requirements to prove who operated a vehicle at a given time.
